The library of the Institute, established in December 1959 as a predecessor of the Institute, served the document supply of the Szombathely Teacher Training Institute. From 1974, it managed the libraries of 11 departmental depositories and the Bolyai János Practical School within the framework of the independent Szombathely Teacher Training College, and developed into the most important specialised library for pedagogy in the region. In 1977, a media library was established to support audiovisual training at the college. In 1989, the library was expanded and a 400 m2 lending pavilion was added. In 1991, a 350 m2 Foreign Language Library was created on the second floor of the college's "D" building, with nearly 20,000 volumes.

Since 1990, the library has had an Internet terminal and since 1992 an ISIS computer library database. In 1994, the ALEPH integrated library system was introduced and all its modules were used by the staff in the following years. Computerised lending started in 2003, but the Practical School started using automated lending as early as 2001, using the integrated library system Szikla21. In 2003, the library upgraded its IT infrastructure to the ALEPH500 graphical interface.

From 1997, as a public library, it had its own website, and in 1999, in a separate part of building "D", the European Documentation Centre was added to the college's library network.

In order to consolidate library space and improve services, the Regional Higher Education Resource Centre building was opened in 2006 and the library of the Vas County Pedagogical Institute was integrated. The library services of the institution were concentrated and renewed on three floors of 3000 m2.

In 2008, due to institutional changes, the library became a member library of the University of West Hungary under the name of the Library of the Savaria University Centre.

From 1 February 2017, the Savaria University Centre Library and Archives will continue its activities as the ELTE EKL Savaria Library and Archives (SKL), a member library of the ELTE University Library and Archives. Its predecessor institutions, the Library of Berzsenyi Dániel College, received the "Library of the Year" award in 2007, and the Library of the Savaria University Centre of the University of West Hungary received the "Certified Library of the Year" award in 2014.

The basic task of the SKL is to provide public library services for the courses of the Savaria University Centre (SEK), to collect, preserve and make available to the public archival and archival documents related to the SEK, and to provide a specialised library service for the teachers of the county.
