Document Cataloguing and Metadata Services

Professional Consultation on Cataloguing and Acquisition

The Collection Development Department of the University Library provides support for the descriptive and subject cataloguing (both formal and content-based) of documents – such as books, journals and manuscripts – available in the member libraries of the University Library Service (ULS). The department also offers guidance on acquisition-related issues and continuous professional support for librarians.

If the ILS Information and Support Platform does not provide the required information, questions and comments are primarily welcome via email.

Expert Opinions on Rare Books and Special Collections

The specialists in historical collections at the Collection Development Department offer expert evaluation of the value and age of rare manuscripts, books and journals found in the university’s libraries. They also assist with the cataloguing of these materials in the shared catalogue.

If the ILS Information and Support Platform does not provide answers to specific questions, the staff responsible for rare book cataloguing is at your service at regikonyv@lib.elte.hu.

Correction of ILS Data Issues

The Integrated Library System (ILS) used jointly at ELTE currently holds over 1 million bibliographic records and more than 1.5 million item records. Due to the system’s evolution from multiple  catalogues and ongoing localized cataloguing work, inconsistencies, duplicates or cataloguing practices not aligned with current standards may occur.

To maintain data consistency and compliance with current cataloguing rules and regulations, the ILS Coordination Committee of the Library Council meets regularly, and centralized data corrections are carried out. These corrections are coordinated by the University Library in cooperation with the member libraries.

Coordination of Analytic Cataloguing in the MATARKA Database

MATARKA is a freely accessible national database that enables searching and browsing of tables of contents from academic and professional journals. A four-member team within the Collection Development Department of the University Library and Archives is responsible for entering data on scholarly journals published by ELTE that are of national interest.

Currently, the University Library curates 30 journals, and support is also provided to ULS member libraries with responsibilities related to MATARKA.
