The library of the Institute, established in December 1959 as a predecessor of the Institute, served the document supply of the Szombathely Teacher Training Institute. From 1974, it managed the libraries of 11 departmental depositories and the Bolyai János Practical School within the framework of the independent Szombathely Teacher Training College, and developed into the most important specialised library for pedagogy in the region. In 1977, a media library was established to support audiovisual training at the college.
The libraries of ELTE have a so-called collection sharing arrangement, whereby the libraries of the different faculties and the collection of the University Library and Archives together provide direct access to the literature of the sciences taught and researched at the University. The Savaria Library and Archives provides library services to students and staff of the faculties and departments of the ELTE in Szombathely. Its collections are mainly in the fields of teacher education, pedagogy and psychology, engineering and economics.
